What makes quality web host? Is it the type of hardware they are running? Is it the type of facility they are in? Or is it what they offer to the client? Well its all of these things. A quality hosts finds the balance in all of these and more. Sure some companies can offer unlimited disk space and bandwidth, however what most don't realize is they pack those servers full with hundreds of clients if not more. In the hopes that most will not use much. Sure most people don't need a top of the line hosting company that is running on racks and racks of hardware. But do you really want to be one of the chickens stuffed into the small cage with other chickens with barely enough room to move around?
Type of hardware
Ask about the hardware they are running on. Are they using 10 year old machines, or are they using relatively new hardware. Servers are just like your home computer over time they start to slow down. Sure they have more power behind them and can run laps around what your computer can do. But also realize they are doing a bunch more things than your computer. Hardware gets old, sure for a geek a 10 year old computer is a fun project. But you should not be running business critical applications or websites on one. Here at 421 Entertainment we run on current generation hardware. As we grow and gain more customers we increase our servers capacities in space as well as power. We want to provide the best environment for you to succeed. It should not take 10 seconds to load a small little page that says "hello world".
Facility
Where your website is going to be hosted is important. Is it in the basement of some old fart living in his parents basement? Do they have measures in place in event of power outages, network problems or anything for that matter. Here at 421 Entertainment we are hosting in the top data centers in the world. Primarily located in Texas and with servers in California as well. Every place we are at has generators that kick in during a power outage to keep our servers running no matter what. (Short of being blown off the face of the Earth) On top of that we have multiple network backbones that we are connected to so even if one of our providers are having issues we will still be up and running. 100% uptime is what we aim for!
What do they offer?
So you may or may not have started looking around already but what do all these numbers mean that your reading? How do they treat their customers. Just because they are the biggest company around or most known does not mean they are the best. Sure 421 Entertainment may seem pricy and you could easily get more elsewhere but what are you really getting? Here you will be paying for customer service that cares. If there is an issue with the server you should not have to tell us since we will have seen it already with our 24/7 monitoring software that notifies us the moment anything starts to look like it might cause a problem. When we say you get this; You actually get that space, bandwidth, database what ever it may be... We do not over sell here to our clients, and do not let our clients who have reseller packs oversell either. Which means in the long run even if are at 100% capacity on a server it will still be performing as it was if you were the first client on it. Here we give everyone the luxury suite, Heck we will even give you a whole floor or building if you think you need it.
So where should I go?
Well in the end you need to make up your mind in what you want to pay for. There are plenty of good hosts out there that can do the same thing we do, Maybe for less maybe more. No matter where you go make sure you know what your getting. Find reviews, don't always rely on the testimonials that they list as its pretty easy for them to only list the positives. Don't buy their gimmicks for UNLIMITED disk space of bandwidth since in reality you will never need that much or even use that much (at least most people wont). Make sure they are not over crowding their servers with 10 times the amount of clients they should be hosting. At the end of the day if you are doing anything important with your site: be it a personal photo album or a corporate website you should never settle for the bottom of the barrel.

Encryption Methods
So after running some tests today using PHP's hash function I have found out that when using the hash function there is very little difference between sha1-512 and md5. However with PHPs built in md5 function it just BLOWS away the hash function. So I have come to the conclusion to use MD5 and salt my passwords. In the end if our database is ever compromised they will still have to regenerate their rainbow table for each password they want to find.
New site!
Well we finally are launching our new site. Some of the features like comments on the blogs are broken but its pretty slick. A few things to note is that this column will be for News and announcements. Of course if we have a HUGE announcement we will place it on the homepage. Otherwise as we write articles or find cool things to tell our visitors or clients we will post them up there.
